Recently via Twitter, Donald Trump announced that transgender people would be banned from serving in the military. Previously, Trump tweeted in 2016 that he would protect the LGBT community from violence and hatred that may come their way. Since switching his tune, many have come out and criticized Trump, including former Army Sgt. Shane Ortega. The retired veteran is the first out trans soldier to serve in the United States military.
During an interview with Mic, Ortega gave some thoughts on Trump’s ban, saying, “To be quite frank, my first thought was, ‘F***!’ Trump is a man who is literally a war-dodger, who comes from a life of privilege and silver spoon, who has no connection to reality whatsoever, and I don’t know how much more the American public needs to see that.”
Ortega went on to say, “What more will it take for people in this country to become really outraged?” Trump revealed his reasoning for the ban via Twitter, saying that trans people in the military would create “tremendous medical costs.”
