PLAYERS & TEAM EARNING

By CJ McMahonJan 06, 2022

When Floyd Mayweather steps back in the ring in February, the five-division world champion will add to an already iconic career as one of sports’ biggest earners of all time.

It was only a matter of time before Floyd “Money” Mayweather made headlines again.

Only months removed from his eight-round exhibition fight with YouTuber-turned-boxer Logan Paul, Mayweather is back in the spotlight after announcing he will look to make history by taking part in the first match to be held on the helipad of the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in Dubai.

But really it doesn’t matter who he fights.

A matchup with Mayweather is a guaranteed draw no matter who it involves or where it takes place — helipad or huge arena.

Boasting a 50-0 record, it’s safe to say the 44-year old “retired” boxer is a claimant to the GOAT designation in professional boxing. And he apparently isn’t done yet.

With his latest combat spectacle sure to add a new layer to his legacy and pad his pockets, even more, it’s time to take stock of how Mayweather made his bag.

From endorsements and investments to the guaranteed paydays he’s pulled for his many punchouts, Mayweather is a bonafide billion-dollar industry unto himself.

The money really started to flow for Floyd when he split with Bob Arum’s Top Rank in 2006 and created Mayweather Promotions to handle things under his own roof.

With his career in his own hands, Mayweather went on to amass world championships in five divisions in a sensational professional career which includes huge wins over all-timers like Pacquiao, Shane Mosley, Oscar De La Hoya, and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez — each time securing bigger and bigger fight purses.

And as one of the top earners in all of sports, he’s frequently claimed the No. 1 spot on Forbes’ annual list of the world’s highest-earning athletes in addition to landing the top spot on their decade-ending list in 2019 with an estimated $915 million.

In addition to Mayweather Promotions, which continues to attract a growing roster of promising fighters, Floyd is also invested in fashion through his lifestyle brand, The Money Team, and NASCAR through his stock car racing organization, The Money Team Racing.

And let’s not forget about the nightclub (Girl Collection) and roller skating rink (Skate Rock City) he owns in Las Vegas, or the numerous charitable organizations he’s involved with, or the countless brand partnerships he’s entered into — such as the deal he signed with OddsChecker earlier this fall to promote the start of the NFL season.

But in one of his latest business ventures, Mayweather is making inroads in the world of non-fungible tokens with FLOYDNFT and in cryptocurrency with BXMI NFT marketplace.

In fact, the upcoming fight in Dubai is expected to feature boxing’s first-ever blockchain and NFT integration, the finer details of which have yet to be revealed.

While it’s unknown just how much will be on the line for the upcoming fight, it’s a safe bet that everyone involved will make some major money — and that Floyd won’t be fading off into the background no matter what happens in the ring.
