Chauncey Mahan – Roc-A-Fella’s former sound engineer – filed a federal lawsuit against the rap veteran and his company Roc Nation, claiming that he was responsible for mostly all of the tracks produced by the label between 1999 and 2000 and wants to be listed as the co-owner for copyright reasons. This comes after Jay Z and the label filed a police report on Mahan, stating the engineer tried to extort him by holding boxes of masters and refusing to return them unless he received at least $100,000 for them. Shortly thereafter the masters were seized from Mahan by the LAPD, which Jay Z believes led to the lawsuit at hand.

Unfortunately for Mahan, the judge sided with Jay and dismissed the case on April 15, stating that Chauncey’s arguments were “frivolous” and that the suit came too many years after the statue of limitations to claim ownership of the songs created. Mahan was awarded nothing, and once again, Mr. Carter comes out on top.
