From damaging a window with a chair at Good Morning America’s Times Square Studios in 2011 to his 2013 arrest for felony assault, Chris Brown’s career has, for the better part of the last decade, been defined by controversies that have played out in the public eye. Now, the singer is discussing his demons on his own terms in the first full-length trailer for the documentary Welcome to My Life.

The documentary will tackle Brown’s troubled past in addition to chronicling his meteoric rise from average high school student to an international music sensation. Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige, Rita Ora, and Usher make appearances in the trailer, discussing Brown’s career and the impact it had on the entertainer and pop culture.

The Welcome to My Life trailer also features testimonials from Brown himself. “It’s not really something even myself could really comprehend at the time. That’s dangerous,” Brown says of the negative backlash he received after physically assaulting Rihanna in 2009. “I was thinking about suicide… I wasn’t sleeping, I barely ate, I just was getting high.”

Though his violent behavior has drawn criticism, Brown’s music career has yet to suffer considerable damage. Since 2009, the singer has notched two No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 and 24 singles (as a lead artist) on the Billboard Hot 100. His most recent album, 2015’sRoyalty, was certified Gold by the RIAA in March.

Welcome to My Life is directed by Andrew Sandler, a Los Angeles-based director who previously helmed Nothing to Lose, a documentary about a former gang member, Ryan Blair, who overcame a troubled upbringing as a teen gang member to become a successful entrepreneur and author.

Brown previously Instagrammed the film’s original poster, which notes how the entertainer went from being “America’s sweetheart” to “public enemy number one,” in March.

A release date for the film has not yet been announced. Watch the new trailer for Welcome to My Life in the video above.
