In an interview with The Daily Beast, Lee says he’s completely unsurprised by the critically-praised film about the civil rights movement being snubbed in categories it was considered to have a lock on (i.e. Best Director, Best Actor).
Lee didn’t despair, though, and advised Selma director Ava DuVernay and the cast of the film not to despair either, and he provided this big reason why:
“That doesn’t diminish the film. Nobody’s talking about motherfuckin’ Driving Miss Daisy. That film is not being taught in film schools all across the world like Do the Right Thing is. Nobody’s discussing Driving Miss Motherfuckin’ Daisy. So if I saw Ava today I’d say, ‘You know what? Fuck ‘em. You made a very good film, so feel good about that and start working on the next one.’”
