MANNY Pacquiao finally announced he’ll face former world champion Adrien Broner next in a fight which hopefully will lead to a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The 39-year-old Filipino boxing icon said the match with Broner could be held either on Jan. 12 or 19, likely in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao made the announcement on Wednesday night when he was introduced as the latest ambassador of International Sports Promotion Society or ISPS Handa at Makati Shangrila Hotel.
“Broner, Adrien Broner,” said Pacquiao when asked who he’s going to fight next. “I think either January 12 or 19.”
Asked if the Broner bout is in preparation for the Mayweather rematch, Pacquiao was non-committal.
“Basta laban lang tayo,” he said.
Pacquiao, the reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion, also revealed during the event that Mayweather is likely to come out of retirement and fight again on December 31, but didn’t name who will be the opponent and when the bout would happen.
Representatives of ISPS Handa conferred the recognition to Pacquiao during the hour-long press conference and officially turned over its contribution amounting to $100,000 to the senator’s charity foundation.
ISPS Handa country director Kevin O’Brien handed over to the Filipino senator the huge replica check.
“It is a great honor to be an ISPS Handa ambassador,” said Pacquiao.
“I was able to meet Dr. Handa earlier in Japan this year, and we have become good friends since then. Since we are both sports enthusiasts, we share the same vision of using sports to bring people together and promote world peace. And I am happy to know that this is the same vision that has inspired ISPS Handa since it began,” he added.
Top rank golf pros Lydia Ko, Erniel Els, Rafa Cabrera-Bello, Lexi Thompson, Michelle Wie, Thorbjorn Olessen, Emiliano Grillo, and Lee Westwood are the other ISPS Handa ambassadors.
Founded by Harushisa Handa, the Japanese charitable organization has gained renown for its active involvement and sponsorship in major global tournaments and has also played a major role in the promotion of blind golf worldwide.
