Not everyone was as moved by Kendrick’s verse though. We caught up with Nelly on the red carpet at the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta to get his opinion. Here’s what he had to say:
“I wouldn’t say Kendrick shook up hip-hop. He did his thing, but I don’t think it was a shake up. We’ve had Tupac and Biggie killings – that’s a shake up. East Coast, West Coast war – that’s a shake up. Somebody spittin’ a hot 16 or a hot 24 – and it was dope – I don’t think that’s a shake up.”
Shake up or no shake up, the BET Hip-Hop Awards served as a reminder once again that Kendrick Lamar is a fierce competitor in the hip-hop game. Kendrick brought down the house as he took the stage to perform his smash hit “Money Trees” with Jay Rock. And his moment wasn’t over there! The 26-year-old rapper came out spittin’ fire once again during the cyphers. His suggestive lyrics had some people ducking for cover and left others once again wondering if it was them he was talking about.
We think B.D.E’s cypher was the best of the night, but we want to hear from you. Which crew had the hottest set? Check them out here.
