And just like that, MTV’s “Cribs” is officially back.
On Wednesday (Aug. 11), the franchise relaunched, with Big Sean appearing for the first new episode. In it, Sean showcases his swanky California home, one that includes a secret nightclub.
Over the course of the episode, Sean takes MTV everywhere from his recording studio to his living room as he shows the world how rap stars like himself are living. The aforementioned nightclub was one designed by Guns N’ Roses’ Slash.
“When I bought the house, Slash had this whole club down here and they were like, ‘You can turn this into whatever you want,’” Sean remembers as he explores the space. “I’m like, bro, you fucking kidding me? This is Slash’s club!”
“Cribs” originally started in 2000, and it aired in various iterations until 2011. In July, it was announced that the show had been revived, and obviously, Big Sean popped out for the first episode.
“‘Cribs’ didn’t simply introduce the celebreality genre, it created a blueprint for how we engage on social media,” MTV Entertainment Group’s President of Content and Chief Creative Officer Nina L. Diaz said last month. “We are thrilled to usher in a new era of this iconic franchise for audiences around the world.”
The first new episode of “Cribs” arrives as the one-year anniversary of Big Sean’s Detroit 2 album approaches. Filled with introspective lyricism and nimble flows, the project showcased all the skills that made him a star in the first place.
A month ago, Sean pulled up on Yung Bleu’s “Way More Close,” a cut from the Alabama rapper’s Moon Boy project. On that song, he reflects on a fractured relationship. It was a reminder of his ability to drop memorable bars. “Close as it gets, I can’t go back to pretendin’ like I don’t know you exist/I gotta over insist, I only burn bridges to the places that I never should’ve been to begin with this shit,” he spits on the song.
