New Edition – REUNITED

7

At the Essence Fest on Sunday in the Superdome, Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe and Johnny Gill reconvened in matching white dinner jackets over black vests and slacks. They were obviously well-rehearsed for the first show of their latest reunion. Arrayed in a line of six microphone stands, they stepped, spun and dipped in precise unison. Their harmonies were also spot-on.

Even Bobby Brown, New Edition’s prodigal son, was on target. “I’m the crazy one out the bunch,” Brown confessed, a point not lost on viewers of his “Being Bobby Brown” reality show with equally troubled ex-wife Whitney Houston.

Brown’s solo set at the 2006 Essence-in-exile in Houston was a mess; the curtain, literally, was dropped on him, much to his displeasure. What he apparently requires is the structure and support provided by his peers; though still a loose cannon, he didn’t fire wildly.

His voice is now a rasp, but he gamely croaked his parts on “Jealous Girl,” “Mr. Telephone Man” and elsewhere, never missing a cue. The current state of his voice was better suited for “My Prerogative,” his signature solo hit.

There was some good-natured debate about the circumstances of his original departure from the group. He insisted “ya’ll gave me the boot” – an exaggerated kick emphasized his point – while the others maintained he quit. Regardless, they are reunited, and it felt so good. “I’m so glad to be back on stage with my brothers,” Brown said.

The New Edition catalog is deeply ingrained in the collective consciousness of the Essence audience; much of that audience stood and sang along for the entire set. So it went through “Cool It Now,” “Count Me Out,” Gill’s solo hit “My My My,” “When Will I See You Smile Again,” and the especially Jackson 5-like “Candy Girl.”

Gill, who joined the group after Brown’s mid-‘80s departure, briefly left the stage to the original lineup. He returned so the six voices could bind together in “Poison,” a hit for New Edition spinoff Bell Biv DeVoe.

WHO IS LOOZE CANNON?

10

A different and unique talent that is [mentally] on a different page than most rappers.
While my music is competitive, relate-able, real and feel-able, key attributes that makes me that UNIQUE artist is:
• I am respectful to women, I believe in the “old ways” of how you should treat your lady at my young age.
• In a song I have called I can make you famous, I state: “I can make u famous, baby you know that’s true, just look
up in the sky, see that star, yeah..that’s you” That’s how I really feel, I will say it in my music and on a date.
• I’m young, fly and flashy.
• I do regular teen things on the daily
• I genuinely love my family, my homies, the ladies, the mall, my city, my fans.

What sets me apart from other rappers is:
I am that guy most rappers are scared to be.
Most rappers have [somewhat] the same mentality; to be hard, thugged out, a fool with money or a gangbanger. I dare to be
different. I dare to be me.

I wouldn’t mind if people thought of me as the “Justin Beiber” of rap. I am versatile, you will hear me more raw in my
mixtape stuff, where my albums might be something different, but you love it all.

I’m a young teen in America, I’m in touch with what goes on in the hood, I roll in the hood, yet I do care about social and
economic issues such voting, drugs in the community.

I don’t want people to think that im tiger woods …so positive and so flawless. I’m not a thug… but I am knowledgeable about
the street game to the fullest and I can talk about it, be in it and around it and still be Looze Cannon.

Recording Artist Drake said it best “ it takes a certain type of man preach…to be far from hood, but understand the
streets” …That sums up my whole character.

Maykeyla – Vent Featured Artist

15

My name is Maykeyla Moore. I am a singer and song writer from Detroit MI. I have been singing since I was 10 years old. I sing all types of music but I’m mostly into pop & R&B. All my life I’ve been told that I seem silent and mysterious but no one knew the depths of my emotions inside. That is how I got started. I found great relief in expressing myself through singing. Singing was my only get away. I made up a song for any experience I went through, happy, sad, lonely, angry rebellious etc. And when I did so, it came from the depths of my heart and soul.

I’ve recorded music in different recording studios in MI such as Talent live, The Disc, Star Factory with producers such as Carl B, Helleva, The Promoter and Rick Young. I have the ability to channel my emotions and experiences and create from it hit songs that make you cry, laugh, get up and party, get up and leave or stop and think. I want to share this with the world. I want to be a superstar! My biggest influences are Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey.

I’ve had an interesting journey in life trying to be a part of two worlds and keeping everyone happy at the same time. Throughout this journey controversy has become a great friend of mine. I’ve had to cross many boundaries and make certain decisions in my life to stay true to who I am. I am Maykeyla Moore and the entertainment industry needs to make way for a new upcoming artist that will bring something new to the table. Something that people from all around the world can relate to.

DESTRUCTION! Massachusetts Tornadoes Leave 4 Dead (WATCH VIDEO)

3

At least four people died Wednesday when tornadoes swept through parts of Massachusetts.

Tornadoes tore through Western and Central Massachusetts yesterday, killing at least four people, injuring an untold number and reducing schools, churches and homes to splinters along its destructive path.

Governor Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency throughout Massachusetts and ordered up to 1,000 troops from the National Guard to help with rescue efforts. He said at least 19 communities had reported damage and he asked officials in those towns and cities to close schools and keep nonemergency personnel home today to allow work crews to clear streets.

“We are in an emergency situation,” said the Governor in a news conference at the state’s emergency management headquarters in Framingham. He said there had been reports of looting in Springfield and he described the damage from the storm as extensive.

“We are hoping and praying and working as hard as possible to keep the fatalities limited to those four already confirmed,” he said.

Two of the deaths occurred in West Springfield, one in Springfield and one in Brimfield, officials said. State Police said 33 people were injured in Springfield alone, including five seriously, in a storm that rapidly spread darkened skies across the state.

In Monson, residents described widespread damage that made the Central Massachusetts town look like it had been bombed. On some streets there appeared to be as many trees fallen as were still standing.

“There’s got to be 10 to 20 houses that are just completely gone,’’ said Heather M. Dickinson, 39, a resident who waited out the storm on her porch.

She said two churches in the small town had their steeples blown off and roofs had been torn off municipal buildings. She said the supermarket on Main Street was “wiped out’’ and several cars had been flipped over by the strong winds.
