The 46-year-old actress could remember how she hadn’t even met her teenage years when her grandmother instilled in her the value of sexual pleasure being something that she herself commands.
“My grandmother taught me about self-pleasuring because she wanted me to know that that pleasure was from me. She didn’t want me to fall into the hands of a man — and if he gave me pleasure, to think that that was him. And she taught me at 9!” Pinkett-Smith shared while sitting in the company of her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, and daughter, Willow Smith during the latest episode of Red Table Talk.
The role that the late Marion Martin Banfield played in the development of her granddaughter’s sexuality came up as one of the more revealing moments of the Sex Talk! Personal Stories From Three Generations episode.
Pinkett-Smith celebrates the lesson as one that would help her prioritize other facets of a relationship by the time she came around to dating in her later years and then marrying in 1997. But along the way, ‘self-pleasuring’ would also prove to be a gift and a curse that she had to develop a sense of discipline over.
“I was really into it at one point, just because I was in an exploration state and I was abstaining from men,” she said while discussing her transition into a stage of fixation with sex-toys. “I actually think I went through kind of an addiction, too, with it. And then one day, I was just like, ‘Enough. You’re having five orgasms a day.’ You get addicted ‘cause you can create so much pleasure. You just constantly want it.”
