Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon-turned-United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under Trump has recently come out to criticize detractors of the current President and his comments on the Charlottesville incident.

Via Facebook, Carson told a story where he mentioned a Confederate flag being put up in his neighborhood shortly after he moved there. According to Carson, the flag was put by one neighbor, but other neighbors quickly put up American flags “shaming the other neighbor” who then took down the flag. From there, Carson spoke on how his home was vandalized with “hateful rhetoric about President Trump” while he was out of town, but was cleaned up by “kind, embarrassed neighbors” before he and his wife returned.

His point was that the anti-Trump messages on his home and the Confederate flag scenario are similar in terms of hatred and bigotry, but “less than kind behavior was met by people taking the high road.” Carson went on to say, “Hatred and bigotry unfortunately still exists in our country and we must all continue to fight it, but let’s use the right tools.” Previously via Facebook, Carson defended Trump’s response to Charlottesville, saying “We all have to recognize that there are other things that are important here and don’t get caught up in these little squabbles and blow them out of proportion. Obviously, when the president talks about the fact that hatred and bigotry and these things are unacceptable, he’s talking about everybody.”
