23 members of the Goonie Boss faction of the Gangster Disciples in Chicago were arrested last week and suspected of killing 11 people over the course of two years in a South Side neighborhood. Purported leader 22-year-old Romeo “O-Dog” Blackman, is accused of killing seven people and five attempted murders on his own.

Blackman was in jail on other charges, and he and three others, Terrance Smith, 22, and Jolicious Turman, 27, and 21-year-old Nathaniel McElroy, were charged federally with a racketeering conspiracy that alleges the killing of 10 people and the attempted murder of six others. A fifth member of the group, Christian Sivels, was charged in state court with an 11th murder, and all charges carry life sentences. Nine other members of the group are facing federal weapons charges.

Most of the victims were in their late teens and early 20s, aside from 38-year-old Gerald Sias, who was fatally shot in an Englewood barbershop in 2016. The group openly bragged about the murders on social media, and the posts are being used in the case.

CPD Supt. Eddie Johnson spoke on the possibility of Chicago using the RICO act to fight gangs in the city, stating, “I think it is. They’re organized crime. If you don’t think gangs in city of Chicago [are] organized, then you’re fooling yourself. I think that is a valuable tool that we plan on using as much as we can to bring these individuals to justice.”
